New Bible Verse ~ Sunday, August 26th

New Bible verse posted as of Sunday, August 26th. Have a great week!

Psalm 139:7-10 (NIV)

7 Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? 8 If I go up to the heavens, You are there; if I make my bed in the depths, You are there. 9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, 10 even there Your hand will guide me, Your right hand will hold me fast.

CELEBRATE IN THE MONTH OF AUGUST - National Dog Day!

The month of August has been a bit busy for me and I haven't been able to post as many blog posts as I originally planned (i.e. I wasn't able to post about two national holidays I was going to highlight this month, and I also missed last week's Bible verse). Things are finally starting to wind down as the kids head back to school tomorrow. The start of the school year is definitely a reason to celebrate! I can finally get my house back in order and under control, well at least during the hours that my kids are in school. My oldest child begins highschool (9th grade), my middle child starts 7th grade, and my 3 year old is on several wait lists for pre-schools. Soon it will be just me and my dog Sammy at home during the day.
Speaking of my dog, today is National Dog Day. In the month of August, I highlighted several quirky and off-beat holidays just for fun. Today for National Dog Day, I will celebrate my spoiled, yet lovable dog Sammy. Sammy is my baby! And yes, I do spoil him!! :-)  Sammy was a gift from the Lord. Sammy's story is below...

August 26th - National Dog Day - "The Gift of Sammy"

Several years ago while at work, someone brought the most adorable little black and white Shih-Tzu mix puppy into the office. The puppy was no bigger than my hand and I fell instantly in love. At the time, I was not in a position to have a dog. However, I prayed to the Lord that when the time was right, if He could send me a dog just like the one I had seen while at work. About 2 years later, while driving home, I was driving through my subdivision when I happened to glance at a small handwritten sign that mentioned "Shih-Tzu Mix Puppies for Sale." At first I drove right past the sign, but then I backed up and wrote down the number out of curiosity. Once I got home, I called the number and discovered the puppies were for sale right down the road. I still had no idea what the puppies would look like nor did I have any intention that day to bring home a puppy. I went to the house where the puppies were located and there he was...the puppy that would soon be ours. And yes, the puppy looked exactly like the one that I had seen 2 years prior while at work. The puppy was brought home and we named him Sammy. Sammy has been an integral part of our family ever since. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my dog and every time I look at him, I'm reminded of the loving gift the Lord gave to us back in 2008. So today I celebrate our dog, my dog, Sammy. God's gift and little reminder that God does answer prayers...even the little ones! :-)

Here's to my spoiled little adorable brat dog, Sammy...Happy Dog Day!

CELEBRATE IN THE MONTH OF AUGUST - International Left Handers Day

We are now in the month of August and there are several National Holidays during this month to have a reason to celebrate! I found some of these Holidays to be somewhat quirky and off-beat, I couldn't help but highlight them throughout this month, just for fun!

Here is a glimpse at what I have and will be highlighting this month:

Aug. 4th - National Mustard Day
Aug. 10th - National S'mores Day
Aug. 13th - International Left Handers Day
Aug. 16th - National Tell a Joke Day
Aug. 19th - National Aviation Day
Aug. 26th - National Dog Day

August 13th - International Left Handers Day
Today is International Left Handers Day. I am not left handed, so why am I recognizing it, you ask? Because my 14 year old son is. No one else in our immediate family, including the grandparents, are left handed, only my son (although I do have one Aunt that is left handed as well). So I am taking this day to honor my 'unique' son, LOL! When I expressed to him that today was Left Handers Day, he became pretty excited...only because he thought he might get something special today, such as a gift of some sort. No gifts, just a special hug from his mother. Funny how his excited expression quickly turned into an expression I can't really explain, HaHaHa!!

Here's to my unique and wonderful 14 year old son...Happy Left Handers Day!

August 10th - National S'mores Day

Who doesn't like S'mores?? I love them!!! That delicious chocolate, melted by a fire-charred marshmallow, then squeezed together inside two graham crackers. YUM! YUM! Well today is the day, your excuse, to make and devour these traditionally camping treasures because today is National S'mores Day! Although the origin of S'mores is uncertain, the first recorded version of them was found in a 1927 publication by the Girl Scouts and were originally called "Some Mores."

I'm sure most people are familiar with traditional S'mores, so I thought I'd post recipes that were more non-traditional. Enjoy your day!

New Bible Verse ~ Tuesday, August 7th

My apologies for the delay in posting this week's Bible verse, our Internet came back yesterday, Yay, but I'm just now getting an opportunity to draft this post. Have a very blessed week!

Psalm 135:5-6 (ESV)

5 For I know that the Lord is great, and that our Lord is above all gods. 6 Whatever the Lord pleases, He does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all deeps.

Temporarily Postponing Posts...

Hello Blogger friends,

Just FYI...

I have been unable to access the internet on any computer in the house as our internet has been down most of the day, possibly due to the storm that blew through here.  Unfortunately I have been unable to write any posts for this blog today. I only have limited access through my cell phone. I have to postpone my posts until I can gain access again.

Hopefully I will be back online soon! Thanks for your patience and have a very blessed evening!

My Summer Blog Series - "CELEBRATE IN THE MONTH OF AUGUST - National Mustard Day"

CELEBRATE IN THE MONTH OF AUGUST - National Mustard Day

We are now in the month of August and I'm sure many parents are celebrating the fact that their kids will soon be heading back to school! That's definitely a notable celebration as the summer months can be fun, but also exhausting and expensive simply trying to keep the kiddos entertained! However, I found that sending your kids back to school is not the only reason to celebrate this month. There are also a number of National Holidays during the month of August you can get excited about.

I found some of these Holidays to be somewhat quirky and off-beat, I couldn't help but highlight them throughout this month just for fun!

Here is a glimpse at what I will be highlighting this month:

Aug. 4th - National Mustard Day
Aug. 5th - International Friendship Day
Aug. 10th - National S'mores Day
Aug. 13th - International Left Handers Day
Aug. 16th - National Tell a Joke Day
Aug. 19th - National Aviation Day
Aug. 26th - National Dog Day

August 4th - National Mustard Day

Did you know...?

SPICY:● Dijon – is made with mustard seeds, white wine, herbs and spices and can be used to dress up pork chops, beef skewers and chicken, also as a coating for fish or in salad dressings. Dijon harmonizes with light and elegant wines such as Riesling, Beaujolais or Cabernet Franc.

● Country Dijon – delivers a rich and robust flavor! Coarse ground mustard seeds balance the blend of cinnamon, cloves and white wine in Country Dijon. Serve with crab cakes, or in pasta salads, shrimp sauté, or cream soups. Pair with a Chardonnay or Pinot Noir which enhance the flavor of the spices.

● Harvest Coarse Ground – made with whole mustard seeds that gives this variety a rich texture and taste and adds a visually appealing accent to dishes. This mustard best accompanies heartier dishes like T-bone steaks, grilled pork tenderloin or scalloped potatoes. Try with full-bodied red wines such as Syrah or Cabernet blends.

SPICY & SAVORY:
● Hearty Spicy Brown – its bold taste comes from finely diced yellow onion and hints of brown sugar. Use with corned beef, sausages, or add to cole slaw or seasonal vegetables. This mustard pairs best with Sauvignon Blanc and firm, medium reds such as Malbec.

SAVORY & SWEET:
● Savory Honey – hint of rich honey and subtle spice with influences of coriander, paprika and turmeric round out this mustard. This mustard is delicious on salmon fillets, ham, grilled chicken or in hearty baked beans. Serve with Pinot Grigio or spicy red wines such as Zinfandel.

● Mild & Creamy – a blend of Dijon mustard and mayonnaise, it has a delicate taste and texture and delivers a rich smooth flavor. This variety is a great match with simple foods such as deli sandwiches and wraps, as well as risotto. Enjoy with Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc.

--The above (and chart below) are compliments of Grey Poupon Mustard.

Who'd of thought that mustard and pairing mustard with food could be just as sophisticated as wine! Since today is National Mustard Day, why not go out and celebrate by indulging with a little bit of mustard!

Since I already have salmon fillets defrosted, I found a recipe I think I will try out tonight in honor of National Mustard Day. Here is the recipe to also get you inspired! Martha Stewart's 'Mustard Glazed Salmon.'

Mustard Glazed Salmon

Ingredients
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • Salt and pepper
  • 4 pieces salmon fillet (6 ounces each), with skin
  • Chopped fresh dill (optional)

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. In a small bowl, mix together olive oil, mustard, lemon juice, and 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper.
  2. Put salmon, skin side down, in a baking dish, and spoon mustard glaze over each piece of fish. Bake until salmon is just cooked through and no longer red, 6 to 8 minutes. Sprinkle with chopped dill, if desired, and serve.
